HDMI protection devices from STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics has launched its latest single-chip HDMI signal-conditioning and protection ICs, designed for maximum performance up to today’s fastest 4K Ultra-HD data rates.

The new HDMI2C1 series feature active pull-ups on all DDC (Display Data Channel) lines to maintain Ultra-HD signal integrity and minimize dependence on HDMI cable quality. Moreover, the integrated ESD protection has increased bandwidth of 10GHz to pass high-speed 4K signals without distortion. On the other hand, low clamping voltage of 10V and fast response time of 30ns prevent unwanted transients damaging the latest HDMI chips manufactured in ESD-sensitive deep-nanometer process technologies.

Using an HDMI2C1 device can save 80% of pc-board space occupied by discrete protection components, and can accelerate time to market for fast-moving consumer products such as Ultra-HD set-top boxes and Blu-ray players. In addition, pin assignments are optimized for use with economical single- or two-layer boards.

Additional features of the HDMI2C1 series include a 5V low-dropout (LDO) regulator with short-circuit and over-temperature protection, as well as level shifters for the HDMI DDC, CEC (Consumer Electronic Control) and Hot-Plug Detect (HPD) lines with back-drive protection. In total, four variants are available, including the HDMI2C1-6C1 for use with external ESD protection or common-mode filtering (ST’s ECMF series ) on HDMI data lines thereby enhancing design flexibility.

The HDMI2C1-14HD, HDMI2C1-14HDS, HDMI2C2-14HD and HDMI2C1-6C1 are available in QFN-36L or µQFN-18L packages. Prices start from $0.63 for the HDMI2C1-14HDS, or $0.50 for the HDMI2C1-6C1 for orders of 100 units.

iPhone 6 case that can double your battery life

Battery cases for the new larger iPhones have been slow in coming, but UNU is now selling a beefy case for the iPhone 6, the DX-6, with great battery life and at a competitive price of US$79.00. The case claims to double your battery life, offering more than 300 hours of standby time, more than 60 hours of music playback, and 18 hours of talk time. Of course those numbers are far greater than an iPhone 6 running on its internal batteries.

Mophie has also announced a similar case with a $99.00 price point and a slightly less powerful battery, but it hasn't hit the street quite yet, and UNU hopes to grab a significant share of the market for these battery cases.

Specifications
  • Dimensions: 6 x 2.8 x 0.6 inches
  • Weight: 3.36 ounces
  • High grade Li-polymer rechargeable battery
  • Minimum rated talk time: 15 hours
  • Battery: Li-Polymer 3.7V/3000 mAh
Design

The UNU case is sturdy, with fully covered corners, a raised lip for screen protection, and a solid frame that should protect your iPhone. The phone easily sips in and out of the case. The bottom shell has the Apple Lightning connector, but the case itself charges from an included Micro USB cable.

Using the UNU battery case

Everything worked as expected. The case was partially charged when unpacked, so an hour or so later I was ready to go. A green LED on the back lets you know the case is fully charged. As your day progresses, you use the iPhone internal battery, and when the battery is nearly depleted you press a button on the back of the DX-6 for 2 seconds. That engages the case battery, and you are all set with the case charging your iPhone 6 quickly back up to 100 percent. It's no different than plugging it into a wall outlet, except you are not tethered. Headphones are often a problem with these cases because the iPhone headphone jack is recessed with the case over the top. UNU provides an extender, but it's something else to carry and hopefully not lose. All other iPhone controls are easily accessible through cut-outs.

This is a 4th-generation case for UNU; they've been at it for five years, and they obviously know how to make a good battery case. I do think buying a case like this for an iPhone 6 involves a series of tradeoffs. The iPhone is going to get even bigger (thicker and longer) and it's going get heavier. For use around town where users have plenty of charging opportunities, or in a car with an auto power adapter, the size and weight may outweigh the usefulness. On the other hand, for people who travel and don't have handy sources of AC power this case is a godsend.

You can do your regular sync duties with the included cord that also charges the batteries of both your iPhone and the battery case. LED indicators tell you about the status of the battery charge.

The case is shipping now in black; white and red are coming very shortly. The UNU DX-6 is available at the usual online outlets like Amazon for a bit less money than the list price.

The DX-6 is well built, has a powerful battery, and offers solid protection for your iPhone 6 at a reasonable price.

These USB to Lightning charging cables are AWESOME

No, I'm not being overly effusive about a USB to Lightning charging cable; I'm just referring to the brand name for a line of accessories. Awesome Cables used crowdfunding and some design smarts to create charging cables that are a bit different from what you'll get from most other manufacturers.
Today we're looking at a pair of these cables, both of which use a braided, non-tangle covering on the exterior. The Mamba Cable (US$30) is Apple MFi-certified, and what you're going to love about this cable is its length - it's 10 feet (3 meters) long! No more sitting next to a wall outlet while charging; you'll be able to hang out at a distance.
The Lightning connector and USB plug both have aerospace aluminum shells, and there are good-sized stress relievers on both ends as well. Unlike the stock Apple cables, you're not going to eventually see cracking where the cable meets the connectors, and that's a good thing.
The Mamba Cables are expected to ship this month, and you can pre-order them now in either Lightning or micro USB styles ($20) in black or glow-in-the-dark.
The other cable I tested was the 6-foot Braided Awesome Cable 2.0 ($22) in a fun Camo finish (note: the Camo finish was apparently still visible to my cats, who like to play with it). Only the black cables are showing as shipping at this time, but you'll be able to get them in gold, silver and blue finishes soon as well as the Camo pattern.
There's usually not a lot to say about charging cables - you plug 'em in and they work. But if you're the type of person who is constantly plugging and unplugging charging cables and has had to replace short, cheap plastic cables frequently, spend a few bucks more and consider getting one of the Awesome Cables. I have to admit, they live up to their name.

Featured Review: Crabby Digital Premium USB Cable

USB cables are one of those things we constantly overlook when thinking about what we want or should buy. It is all very well having the best smartphone on the market or a turbo charge charger, but without a suitable cable to connect the two, what do you have? Cables are those forgotten heroes that keep our devices powered and as such should be thought of as just as important. Invest in a good cable and you won’t just have a good cable but you will have a good cable for life. Today, we will be taking a quick look at the Crabby Digital Micro USB Cable.
Probably the most important aspect when buying a decent cable, is the build quality. A cable built well is likely to stand the test of time and all the rough terrain it will encounter in its charging lifespan. The Crabby Digital cable seems to be one of those cables. It is tough, coated in rubber and contains quite a thick USB cable compared to the more generic options. As such this is not exactly a lightweight cable. That said, with weight, comes the expectation of durability. Only time will tell on this occasion but on first impressions, the cable does seem built to last. To add to this, the connections also are well protected. These are usually where most cables fail once the connector becomes broken. The Crabby Digital Premium Cable does offer reinforced connections which should add a decent level of protection over the long haul. Lastly, the cable on offer is a flat cable and as such you are not going to encounter any tangling problems. The lead does neatly stay in an easily usable and tangle-free state. Not to mention, the cable also comes with a handy velcro wrap which can be used to make sure the cable stays closed and aid portability when traveling with it.
There were no major issues in terms of the usability of the Crabby Digital Cable. This one did plug into devices nice and tight and felt as though a firm connection was being made. There was also no issues when charging or using the cable for data transfer (35MB/second) with the cable providing a decent connection. In fact, when transferring data, the cable does do so quite quickly compared to generic branded options. If you are looking for a nice and well-priced cable to give your premium smartphone that additional premium feel, then you should probably consider this option. The Crabby Digital Premium Cable is a 6ft cable and comes with a USB Type 2.0 Male connector to Micro USB Type B connector. Not to mention the cable is being offered with a ‘lifetime guarantee’. If you want to give the cable a try then you can pick it up now from beelike.com where it is currently on sale for $9.99

The reversible USB Type-C connector is turning heads at CES

The next-gen USB connector is slim, sturdy and will deliver up to 100 watts of power

A cable connector is an odd thing to get excited about, but when it's something as ubiquitous as USB you can perhaps forgive people for getting a little worked up.
The new Type-C connector has been making some appearances at the International CES this week, and it brings several improvements that are worth paying attention to if you're a USB user, which most people will be for some time yet, at least until everything goes wireless.

Having handled a Type-C connector here I can tell you that it felt very sturdy, so despite being as slender as a Micro USB connector it doesn't seem like we'll have a "bendgate" over USB Type-C.

One of the chief benefits is that the connector is reversible, so you won't have to worry any more about plugging it in upside down. Also, both ends of a Type-C cable can be identical, so there's no small end for your phone and big end for your PC, as with Micro USB.

It's also faster. The Type-C connector works with the latest USB 3.1 standard, which operates at up to 10Gbps. That's twice as fast as the USB 3.0 standard supported by current USB connectors. (The letter refers to the shape of the connector, while the USB version number denotes its speed and other capabilities.)

A third benefit of Type-C is that it can deliver greater amounts of power -- up to 100 watts. That means you should be able to charge something as big as a laptop via a USB cable, as well as the phones and other small devices you can charge today.

The USB Implementers Forum has been demonstrating the technology this week at CES. On Monday evening it showed it transferring data between two SSD drives and a computer at sustained speeds over 800 MBps.

Jeff Ravencraft, president and COO of the USB Implementers Forum, pointed out to us that that was first-generation silicon being used and that the SSD drives were at capacity. He's confident he'll soon get to throughput of well over 1GBps.

He also noted that the cable itself is only one piece of the puzzle. It will be up to device makers and PC makers to build support for Type-C connectors and USB 3.1 into their products.

Taiwanese systems builder MSI is showing a gaming motherboard at CES with USB 3.1 and a Type-C connector. And DisplayLink, which makes docking stations, is demonstrating compatibility between Type-C and standard Type-A connectors at its booth.

Nokia's N1 tablet is among the first products that have been announced with a Type-C connector port. Nokia has said it will go on sale in February in China and soon after in other countries.

Although the USB 3.1 spec was only recently finalized, the Implementers Forum is already researching ways to increase its speed, which will make it more competitive with the Thunderbolt technology developed by Apple and Intel.

USB Type-C cable plugs to be reversible

The new USB Type-C connector will be reversible unlike the current USB 3.0 version

USB cable developers have announced that a forthcoming version of the connector's plug is to be reversible.
It means users of the Universal Serial Bus cables will no longer have to worry which way round the part is facing when plugging it into a device.
The specification is due to be completed by mid-2014, and the first product on the market by 2016.
It will neuter one of the advantages Apple's proprietary lightning cable currently has over the USB system.
The first USB cable were released in the mid-1990s and, until now, could only be plugged into a computer or other device one way round to ensure a data connection.
The Promoter Group, which agrees the design of the standard, is currently made up of representatives from Intel, HP, Microsoft, Renesas Electronics, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments.
"Consumers are now demanding thinner and sleeker product designs and the USB 3.0 Promoter Group recognises this need," said the group's president Jeff Ravencraft.
He added that the development was unrelated to Apple's move to a reversible system.

USB Type-C will be roughly the same size as a micro-USB connector, seen on the left
Other changes to the current version - USB 3.0 - include:
  • A smaller size, giving the full-size USB Type-C plug similar dimensions to the micro-USB format used by many smartphones and tablets
  • Support for scalable power charging, allowing the cable to offer up to 100 watts
  • Data speed transfers of up to 10 Gbps, double what is possible at the moment
  • A promise that the new design will accommodate further upgrades
"This allows USB to increase performance and continue to deliver ease of use to several evolving product categories for years to come," said Roland Sperlich, from Texas Instruments.
One industry watcher welcomed news of the update.

Apple's Lightning connector is already reversible
"I don't think consumers buy devices based on the type of plug, so in terms of driving adoption of a certain type of smartphone, tablet or PC it doesn't make a great deal of difference," said Ian Fogg, from consultants IHS.
"Where I think it is important is the convenience of using the devices, and increasingly USB is used not just to connect and share data, but as a way of charging our machines.
"Anything that makes it easier and more convenient to charge is a good thing as it's something we all have to do very frequently."
